“Ethical Wills:” Drafting Wills to Reflect Client Values - 1 CLE hour

Ethical wills are detailed instruments that allow clients to provide instructions to trustees about distributions and other matters and communicate with heirs about the testator’s plans and principles. Ethical wills work in tandem with traditional estate and trust documents, complementing and supplementing them, filling in gaps that are not easily filled by conventional legal documents. These wills are increasingly popular as a method of effectuating the values of the testator, and diminishing the substantial risk of post-mortem dispute and litigation among heirs and between heirs and trustees.  But ethical wills take time to explain and develop with clients, and come with their own key provisions and some traps. This program will provide you with a real-world guide to counseling clients about ethical wills, working with them to develop these wills, integrate ethical wills with traditional estate and trust documents, and develop your practice.

Speaker:

 

John A. Warnick is an attorney and wealth counselor in Denver, Colorado, with a national estate and trust planning practice. He is widely recognized for his counseling of high net worth families on purposeful giving, the process of not only transferring wealth but creating a lasting legacy. He is also the managing collaborator of the Purposeful Planning Institute and a wealth consultant with Family Wealth and Transition Solutions.  Mr. Warnick is a Fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel and formerly practiced law with Holme, Roberts & Owen, LLP in Denver.  He received his B.A. from Brigham Young University and his J.D. from The George Washington University Law School.
