"The day that Jarvarus Gresham found out he'd gotten into law school, he made two phone calls: one to his family and one to his mentor from the Atlanta Bar Association's summer law internship program, Harold Franklin Jr., a partner at King & Spalding and the Atlanta bar's current president.

'Before I had the opportunity to call anyone else, my phone was blowing up with people calling to say congratulations and ask what they could do to help,' Gresham said.

He received texts and calls from a host of his other mentors from the summer internship program, including its three coordinators—S. Wade Malone of Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough, V. Natasha Perdew Silas of the Federal Defender Program and Nekia Hackworth, who is now senior counsel for U.S. Deputy Attorney General Sally Yates in Washington—as well as Yates' husband, Comer Yates, who coached his high school mock trial team, and his former boss, Darius Pattillo, a DeKalb County prosecutor and program alum."
