The Atlanta Legal Aid Society has been providing no-cost legal assistance to low income clients in the Atlanta area since 1924. In addition to providing services in the core areas of family law, housing, consumer law, and public benefits, we have developed special projects to meet the complex legal needs of particularly vulnerable groups such as the elderly and people living with serious illnesses like AIDS and cancer.
Last year, Atlanta Legal Aid handled over 22,000 cases, won over $1.5 million in child support, saved over 31 homes and over $1 million in home equity, secured over $4.4 million in skilled care and personal care benefits, and eliminated over $2.5 million in consumer debt. The true impact of what we do is not in the numbers, but in the lives of the people we help. We help people like “Juanita.” Juanita raised three children on her own while working part-time for the Atlanta Public Schools. She bought her home in the 70’s, but was in danger of losing it when she was diagnosed with cancer and could no longer work. After four years of negotiations, her Atlanta Legal Aid lawyer persuaded the bank to accept a short payment with cash generated from a reverse mortgage, allowing Juanita to remain in her home.
