Georgia Lawyers for the Arts, through its network of nearly 500 volunteer attorneys, provides free legal representation to musicians, songwriters, photographers, sculptors, dancers, actors, filmmakers, painters, graphic designers, and artists from many other disciplines through the provision of educational seminars, clinics and workshops.  GLA serves thousands of artists and arts organizations in Georgia, providing well over $1,000,000 of free legal services per year.  In addition to providing pro bono legal services to limited-income artists and nonprofit arts organizations in the State of Georgia, GLA conducts 30 free or low-cost educational seminars and workshops for artists and arts organizations on numerous legal and business-related topics.  Many are directed to artists from all mediums (e.g.,“Basics of Copyright Law for Artists,”“Contract Issues for Artists,” “Financial Issues for Artists,”), and some are more narrowly tailored for specific disciplines (“Photography Law 201,” “Legal Issues for Visual Artists” “Music Law in the Digital Age,” “How to Negotiate with Galleries”) which educate artists in a particular field about specific legal issues related to that medium.  GLA holds frequent walk-in clinics where artists can meet with volunteer attorneys in private, one-on-one sessions to discuss various issues and legal questions.

GLA also conducts monthly workshops on 501(c)(3) nonprofit incorporation.  GLA, through these seminars and with the help of volunteer attorneys, has assisted hundreds of arts organizations receive tax-exempt status.  GLA not only educates artists about their legal rights and responsibilities with respect to their work but also about practical business and personal issues.  By educating artists, we help them avoid situations such as losing the rights to, or revenue from, their work.  By providing legal services and education to individual artists and arts organizations, we believe that we can improve appreciation and understanding of the arts.
